Lombok diving
Lombok diving from a calmer base
Most people searching for Lombok diving end up booking from Senggigi or Kuta Lombok, where boat rides to the best sites are 60-90 min each way through choppier water. Gili Air is the same dive scene — same reefs, same boats, same instructors many local centres share — but the boats leave from 30 m off the beach and reach the sites in 10-20 min. Same Lombok diving. Calmer base.
Why dive Lombok from Gili Air
- Same sites, shorter trips. The 20+ reef sites off the three Gilis — Hans Reef, Air Slope, Shark Point, Sunset, Manta Point — are geographically closer to Gili Air than to Senggigi.
- No minivan, no busy port. Walk out of your room, 1 minute to the centre, on the boat. Lombok diving from Senggigi starts with a 45-minute minivan.
- Calmer water. The strait between Lombok and Bali calms considerably as you approach the Gilis — the Padangbai-Senggigi crossing can be rough, the Senggigi-Air crossing is sheltered by the islands.
- No motorbikes. Gili Air bans motorized vehicles. You get around on foot, by bike, or by cidomo (horse-cart). It's why couples and families with kids pick Air over a Lombok base.
How to get here: Lombok → Gili Air
From Lombok Airport (LOP): 1.5 hr by car/taxi to Bangsal harbour, then 15 min public boat or 5 min private speedboat to Gili Air. From Senggigi: 30 min by car to Bangsal + 15 min boat. Most hotels arrange door-to-harbour transfer for IDR 350,000-500,000.
