Turtle Heaven lives up to its name completely. Positioned on the north side of Gili Meno, this sloping reef hosts one of the highest densities of sea turtles anywhere in the Gili Islands — encountering ten to fifteen individuals on a single dive is not unusual, and on a good day the count can be even higher. Both green turtles and the smaller, more intricately patterned hawksbill turtles feed and rest across the reef, and they have been diving here long enough to be entirely relaxed around human visitors.

The terrain is a broad coral slope descending from around 10 metres at the crest to 22 metres at the base. Large barrel sponges rise from the slope at regular intervals, and the spaces between them are filled with a mix of branching hard coral, table corals, and sweeping stands of soft coral in purples and oranges. The coral coverage here is notably healthy, providing feeding grounds for the turtles as well as shelter for the rich fish life that lives among them. Surgeonfish, parrotfish, and schools of fusiliers work the reef in large numbers.

Below 18 metres the slope levels into a sandy terrace where blue-spotted stingrays rest half-buried in the sediment. Whitetip reef sharks occasionally patrol the deeper edge of the reef, and nudibranchs in electric colours can be found on the coral overhangs for those who take time to look slowly. The site’s relatively gentle topography and predictable marine life make it a natural choice for Open Water certification dives and introductory dives.

Current is generally light to moderate. The site can be dived in most conditions and is well protected from the prevailing swell. Visibility averages 15–25 metres and the water temperature stays between 27–30 °C. Best season is April through November, though Turtle Heaven is diveable year-round.

Diver tips: Go slow — the turtles are the star of this site and they reward patient observation. Look for them feeding on the coral and algae at the mid-depth sections (12–18 m), then scan the sandy floor for stingrays and the blue at the edge for passing sharks. Give turtles space; a calm approach will keep them in place far longer than rushing in. This site is excellent for underwater photography because the turtles are large, calm, and beautifully lit in the shallow, clear water.
