The Harbour dive site is located directly in front of Gili Air’s main boat harbour on the southern tip of the island. Because the harbour is working during daylight hours, this site is typically dived after 5 pm — conditions that make it one of the island’s premier sunset and night diving destinations. The terrain is a shallow silty slope with staghorn coral gardens, rubble patches, and sea grass, descending to around 18 m before flattening to open sand.

The site’s headline attraction is the mandarin fish — a small but spectacularly colourful dragonet that emerges from dense staghorn coral gardens only during a brief window around dusk each day to display and mate. This predictable behaviour draws underwater photographers from across the world, and Gili Air Harbour is one of the most reliable mandarin fish sites in Indonesia. The dusk dive window typically runs from 30 minutes before to 30 minutes after sunset.

Beyond the mandarin fish, the shallow silty slope near shore rewards patient searching: seahorses are regularly found in the sea grass, cockatoo waspfish crouch on rubble, robust ghost pipefish sway in the current, and harlequin sweetlips juveniles (with their distinctive wavy swimming motion) patrol the staghorn thickets. Hawksbill turtles rest on the reef at night. After dark, bobtail squid hunt above the sand and coconut octopus forage among the debris. Schooling sweetlips and snappers shelter under the staghorn formations.

The site has no current and is protected from swell and wind by the harbour structure, making it one of the most comfortable night dives in the area. Visibility is typically 8–15 m (lower than open reef sites due to the harbour silt).

Diver tips: Book the mandarin fish dive at least a day in advance — group size is limited. Arrive with a fully charged primary and backup torch. Move very slowly through the staghorn gardens to avoid disturbing the fish before they emerge. Evening entry is around 5:30–6:00 pm depending on the season; ask dive staff for the current best timing. Macro photographers should bring a 100 mm lens for the mandarin fish.
