Hans Reef is located on the north-eastern tip of Gili Air and is widely regarded as one of the best macro and muck diving sites in the Gili Islands. The site consists of a gentle sandy slope running parallel to the shoreline, punctuated by large coral pinnacles, smaller bommies, and sandy gullies that create a variety of distinct micro-habitats within a single dive. A section of sea grass at around 7 m grades into open sand and then into the main reef structure at 12–15 m, with large pink barrel sponges marking the deepest section at 22–25 m.

The marine life inventory at Hans Reef is exceptional for a relatively shallow site. The sandy patch starting at 7 m is productive for garden eels, sand lizardfish, blue-spotted stingrays, flounder, and frogfish in multiple colour morphs. Seahorses — both common and pygmy — are regularly found here, and the sea grass provides hunting habitat for juvenile fish including boxfish, batfish, and angelfish. On the larger pinnacles, scorpionfish and leaf scorpionfish rest camouflaged against the coral. Green sea turtles nap on top of the big barrel sponges. Giant moray and black-spotted moray eels poke their heads from crevices. Peacock mantis shrimp emerge from burrows in the rubble. The diversity of nudibranch species at Hans Reef is among the highest in the area.

Night dives here are exceptional: bobtail squid hover in the sand, dwarf cuttlefish hunt in the coral, reef squid flash colour patterns in open water, coconut octopus drag shells across the bottom, and sponge crabs move deliberately through the structure.

Diver tips: Hans Reef is a regular site for Open Water and Advanced training given its accessible depth and calm-water sections. For a dedicated macro dive, focus on the 7–15 m sandy zone and move extremely slowly — new species appear with every careful look. Night dives should be booked at least a day in advance as places fill quickly. Buoyancy control is important to protect the sandy bottom critters and avoid disturbing sediment.
