Takat Malang is a collection of approximately ten large underwater rock formations grouped together on the seabed between Gili Trawangan and the open ocean. In Indonesian, “takat” refers to a shallow reef or rock formation, and these structures live up to the name — broad, sculpted formations with overhangs, outcrops, and natural swim-throughs that create a complex three-dimensional terrain. The plateau begins at 12–15 metres and the deeper Takat bases reach 30 metres, with maximum depth to 40 metres for the most experienced divers.

Each individual Takat is an ecosystem in its own right. The tops of the formations are covered in table corals, gorgonian sea fans, and diverse hard coral colonies, with fish life concentrated densely around the structure. Between the Takats, open sandy channels provide transit corridors for the larger animals that use this site. Schools of barracuda accumulate in the water column above the structures and trevally patrol the gaps between rocks. Blue-spotted stingrays rest in the sandy corridors and garden eels sway in the current at the edges.

Takat Malang is primarily known as a pelagic site — it produces more big-animal sightings than most nearshore reefs. Whitetip reef sharks are regular visitors, cruising the deeper sections of the structure. Eagle rays are sighted on most dives. In the shoulder seasons (March–May and September–November), the site occasionally draws whale sharks — a rare and extraordinary encounter for open-ocean divers at this location. Schools of jacks and unicornfish sweep across the reef in the tens or hundreds.

Current here can be substantial; conditions are best assessed on the day. The site is suitable for intermediate and above divers who are comfortable with open-water conditions and moderate drift. Visibility averages 15–25 metres in good conditions.

Diver tips: Plan your dive around the tidal cycle — the site is most productive when mild current brings food to the structures. Enter on the up-current side and work across the Takat field, ending the dive in the shallows on the down-current side. Explore the swim-throughs and overhangs carefully; they shelter scorpionfish, moray eels, and occasionally frogfish. Keep one eye on the blue during the dive — eagle rays and sharks often appear from the open water rather than from within the reef structure.
