Air Slope runs along the western coast of Gili Air as a gently inclining sandy slope dotted with coral bommies and soft coral formations, descending from about 3 m to 26 m. The upper reef is a mosaic of hard and soft coral outcroppings where anemones host clownfish and colourful gorgonian sea fans sway in the mild current. As the slope deepens, the bottom transitions to sand scattered with garden eels and blue-spotted stingrays resting in the sediment.
Because the site sits on the sheltered western side of the island, it is almost always protected from strong winds and swell, and the current is light to none — conditions that make this an excellent choice for Open Water students and first-time divers. More experienced divers enjoy the site as a relaxed drift along the bommies, keeping an eye on the sandy patches for macro life: pygmy seahorses on the fans, nudibranchs on rubble, and pipefish hiding in sea grass fronds. Green sea turtles are resident and largely indifferent to divers. Schools of fusiliers and snappers sweep past regularly, and lionfish hunt in the overhangs of the larger bommies.
Visibility typically runs 15–25 m and water temperature stays between 27–30 °C. Best season is April through November (dry season) when conditions are calmest and visibility is at its peak, though the site is diveable year-round.
Diver tips: Enter from the boat on the north end and drift south with the island for a natural, relaxed progression from shallow to deep. Keep eyes on the sand — the flat patches between bommies reward careful scanning with stingray, garden eel and flatfish encounters. Ideal for afternoon dives when the sun angle lights the fans beautifully.
