Takat Segaluh is an open-sea pinnacle rising from deep water north of Gili Trawangan — remote, exposed, and uncompromisingly rewarding for the experienced divers who reach it. The top of the structure sits at 16 metres, the usable dive depth runs to 32 metres, and below that the walls continue into the blue well beyond recreational limits. We only run Takat Segaluh on slack tide; outside of that window the current can be prohibitively strong and surface conditions rough.

The structure is a series of interconnected rocky spires covered in gorgonian sea fans, large barrel sponges, and encrusting hard coral. On the deeper sections, black coral trees and sea whips occupy the crevices. The exposed position means the pinnacle is constantly bathed in current-driven nutrition, and the coral growth reflects that — dense, varied, and in better condition than most nearshore sites.

The big draw here is the volume of large animals. Whitetip reef sharks patrol the perimeter of the structure throughout the dive, sometimes in groups of four or five. Schools of barracuda and bigeye trevally form loose spirals in the water column above the pinnacle top, and eagle rays cruise the open water off the deeper edges. In the shoulder seasons (March–April and October–November), mola mola (ocean sunfish) are occasionally seen at depth near the structure — one of the more extraordinary encounters available anywhere in the Gili region.

At shallower depths the current pushes schools of fusiliers and snappers over the pinnacle crest in dense streams, and the coral heads at 16–20 metres are worth slow exploration for nudibranchs, scorpionfish, and the smaller reef inhabitants that occupy every crevice.

Diver tips: Advanced certification and solid buoyancy control are non-negotiable. Arrive with a full tank — the boat ride is longer and conditions can change, so a conservative approach to air is essential. Descend directly to the pinnacle top immediately on entry to avoid being carried off in the current. Keep the structure in sight at all times and agree a maximum distance from the reef before going into the blue after large animals. Surface with a minimum of 50 bar and deploy your SMB well before ascending.
