Mentigi Bay is a sheltered muck dive site on the western coast of Lombok, about 30 minutes by boat from Gili Air. The bay is naturally protected from the Lombok Strait currents that drive most of the Gili Islands’ dive sites, making it one of the most relaxed and current-free diving environments in the area. The substrate is a mix of sand, silt, and scattered rubble with patches of sea grass — conditions that create ideal habitat for cryptic, sand-dwelling, and burrowing species that are absent from the island reef sites.

The absence of current means creatures stay put: subjects are motionless and patient observation is rewarded with encounters that would be impossible in a drift-dive context. Frogfish, ribbon eels, and ghost pipefish are reliable finds. Flamboyant cuttlefish — one of the few cuttlefish species that walks across the bottom — are regularly seen hunting across the sand. Mimic octopus demonstrate their repertoire of impersonations on the open substrate. Stargazers lie buried to their eyes in the sand, waiting for prey. Seahorses grip sea grass fronds in the shallower sections. Devil scorpionfish rest motionless on sand, and various species of sand-burying crab emerge from their hiding places during active foraging periods. Ribbon eels (in black juvenile and blue male and yellow female adult forms) occupy burrows throughout the site.

The sandy bottom means visibility can drop when disturbed, so good buoyancy control is essential. On still days visibility can reach 20–25 m; after boat traffic or rain, it may drop to 8–12 m. Suitable for all certified divers.

Diver tips: Move no faster than walking pace and spend the majority of the dive hovering just above the substrate scanning methodically. The sea grass at 5–8 m is the most productive zone for seahorses and ghost pipefish. Ask your guide about the flamboyant cuttlefish territories — they tend to work specific patches of sand on predictable routes. Perfect for macro photographers at all levels: the calm water eliminates camera shake and allows extended shooting sessions with stationary subjects.
