Deep Halik occupies the northern tip of Gili Trawangan and extends into the deep channel that separates the Gili Islands from Lombok. The site is characterised by a dramatic series of coral ridges and canyons that begin around 18 m and descend to close to 40 m, running parallel to the shoreline. The ridges themselves are pristine — some of the best-preserved coral in the entire Gili area — featuring large gorgonian sea fans, barrel sponges, and soft corals that thrive in the nutrient-rich upwelling current that sweeps through this corridor.

Deep Halik is considered one of the premier big-animal deep dives accessible from the Gili Islands for recreational divers. Whitetip and blacktip reef sharks are commonly seen resting in the sandy gullies between ridges or cruising the outer wall. Eagle rays and occasional grey reef sharks sweep past in the blue water beyond the ridgeline. Giant trevally and schools of fusiliers use the current to hunt above the reef. Deeper still — at 35–40 m — blue-spotted stingrays hunt across the sandy channels and the coral coverage gives way to impressive rock formations.

Current at Deep Halik can range from gentle to very strong, driven by the tidal flow through the Lombok Strait. Conditions are best during the dry season (April–November) when visibility can reach 25–30 m and the current is more predictable. This is strictly an Advanced-level site: comfort with managing buoyancy at depth in moving water is essential.

Diver tips: Plan a conservative bottom time at depth given the nitrogen loading at 30–40 m. The richest coral and the most reliable shark sightings are in the 22–30 m range, so there is no need to push to maximum depth. Nitrox (EANx32) is strongly recommended to extend bottom time and improve safety margins. Dive early in the day when the flood tide brings clean, blue water up from the south.
