“Penyu” means turtle in Indonesian — and the name was chosen for good reason. Takat Penyu is a broad offshore reef plateau located north of Gili Air, stretching roughly 1.5 kilometres from east to west and around 1 kilometre wide. The shallowest sections sit at 15 metres; the sides slope gently to around 28 metres before dropping into deeper water. Both green turtles and hawksbill turtles use this site as a permanent feeding ground, and multiple encounters per dive are reliably expected throughout the year.

The plateau structure is unusual among the Gili dive sites. Rather than a dramatic wall or pinnacle, Takat Penyu is a flat-topped reef with gently sloping sides — an expansive terrain that creates an open, easy-to-navigate environment. The top of the plateau is alive with hard coral: table corals spread across the structure, staghorn colonies fill the shallower sections, and large barrel sponges rise at intervals. On the sides, gorgonian sea fans stand out from the slope and sea whips sway in the passing current, hosting pygmy seahorses for those who look carefully.

Anemones dot the shallower parts of the plateau, each with resident clownfish. Nudibranchs and scorpionfish occupy the rubble patches. Octopus are regularly sighted hunting across the sandy margins, and mantis shrimp can be observed at the entrances to their burrows. Schools of fusiliers and sweetlips sweep across the top of the plateau in loose formation, and snapper congregate around the larger coral heads.

Current at Takat Penyu is moderate and generally predictable, making this an excellent site for intermediate divers and above. It is also used for Open Water course dives when conditions allow — the flat terrain and consistent marine life make it a reliable choice for students and divemasters alike. Visibility typically runs 15–25 metres.

Diver tips: The plateau is large enough to spend an entire dive at relatively shallow depth (15–18 m) and still not cover all of it. Focus on one area and explore it thoroughly rather than rushing across the surface. Carry a macro lens even though the site is associated with larger animals — the gorgonian fans on the slopes regularly hold pygmy seahorses. The sandy edges of the plateau are prime territory for octopus encounters, particularly in the late afternoon when they begin actively hunting.
