Home Reef is the house reef of Gili Air’s dive centres and lies just steps from the beach. The reef is a sandy-bottomed slope descending to around 18 m, with a central pinnacle that acts as a focal point and habitat anchor for the site’s surprisingly rich community of marine life. The shallow upper section features sea grass and rubble that transition into a mixed hard coral garden as the depth increases, with the pinnacle rising from the deeper sand as a landmark visible across most of the dive.
Though it is best known as a training ground for Open Water students — the calm conditions, accessible depth, and proximity to shore make it ideal for skill practice — Home Reef holds its own as a pure fun dive. Crocodile fish lie motionless on the sand, relying on camouflage rather than speed, and can be observed closely without disturbing them. Razorfish (shrimpfish) school vertically in small groups above the sand. Seahorses grip sea grass stems and coral branches throughout the shallower sections. Frogfish perch on sponge. Blue-spotted stingrays rest under coral ledges and in sandy hollows. Several species of nudibranch browse the reef throughout. Garden eels emerge from the sand on the flat lower sections when undisturbed.
Current is none to very light, and visibility averages 10–20 m. The site is particularly well-suited for first-ever ocean dives (Discover Scuba Diving) and for photographers who want to practise their skills in controlled conditions before moving to more demanding sites.
Diver tips: Night dives on Home Reef are a firm favourite — the same species visible by day behave very differently at night. The pinnacle is the best landmark to navigate around and return to at the end of the dive. For beginners, stay above 12 m and focus on the rich variety in the upper coral garden. Experienced macro divers should search the rubble areas carefully — the site occasionally yields surprises such as ghost pipefish and rare nudibranch species.
