Frogfish Point occupies the north-eastern tip of Gili Air, just a short boat ride from the island’s dive centres. The site is centred on a substantial coral block that spans from 5 m to 18 m, with anemone-covered faces and deep crevices that provide ideal ambush habitat for the site’s celebrated cast of camouflaged predators. A shallow coral garden in the upper section hosts a colourful community of reef fish, and the sandy areas surrounding the structure are riddled with garden eels and spotted with small anemones hosting resident clownfish pairs.
Despite the site’s name, frogfish are genuinely resident here in unusual numbers and variety — orange, white, and warty frogfish are all regularly encountered tucked into crevices or sitting motionless on sponge. Ghost pipefish hover near crinoids in the mid-water, while scorpionfish of multiple species blend expertly into the rubble. Cleaner shrimps occupy every suitable host sponge and coral, making them easy to observe. Nudibranchs browse throughout the dive.
The site is beginner-friendly in calm conditions: shallow, close to shore, with typically gentle current. This makes it popular for Open Water diver training dives as well as photography-focused fun dives. Night dives at Frogfish Point are particularly rewarding — the site transforms after dark, with additional octopus activity and sleeping fish visible in the torch beam.
Diver tips: Take your time and move slowly — the entire appeal of this site is the density of camouflaged macro life, which rewards patience. Bring a macro lens if photographing; a 60 mm or 100 mm setup works well on the frogfish and ghost pipefish. Ask your guide to point out the frogfish positions — their camouflage is so convincing that many divers swim past without noticing them.
